GLASS FROM THE GINGER STREET STUDIO
ABOUT THE GLASS USED IN THE GINGER STREET STUDIO
All the hand-blown glass that you see in our store is called Borosilicate, which is scientific Pyrex.
It is used by highly skilled scientific glass blowers, to make special apparatus a scientist needs in the laboratory.
The glass is very strong and can be decorated in a different way than soft glass, Borosilicate is called hard glass.
Gold and silver are used in a process called fuming, which is when a small amount of the silver or gold ( about the size of buckshot ) is put on the end of a glass rod where it will vaporize into a gas when put into the flame of the torch. It will then go into the hot glass that is held in front of the torch to give it a unique color. Silver gives a variation of amber color and the gold will give a variation of pink. The process of working the glass is called lamp-work or torch-work and now some say flame work. No matter the name the process is the same when working the glass.
As I make new items the photos will constantly be changing so you will always have something new to see.
