ABOUT THE GLASS USED IN THE GINGER STREET STUDIO

All the hand-blown glass that you see in our store is called Borosilicate, which is scientific Pyrex.

It is used by highly skilled scientific glass blowers to make special apparatus a scientist needs in the laboratory.

The glass is very strong and can be decorated in a different way than soft glass, Borosilicate is also called hard glass.

Gold and silver are used in a process called fuming, which is when a small amount of pure silver or gold ( about the size of buckshot ) is put on the end of a glass rod where it will vaporize into a gas when put into the flame of the torch. It will then go into the hot glass that is held in front of the torch to give it a unique color. Silver gives a variation of amber color and the gold will give a variation of pink. The process of working the glass is called lamp-work or torch-work and now some say flame work. No matter the name the process is the same when working the glass. The decorations on the glass is all glass not paint so it is on the glass forever and all of my glass can go into the dishwasher.

As I make new items the photos will constantly be changing so you will always have something new to see.
